Second Deployment of seaweed at Danish Kriegers Flak

On the 4–5th of October 2024, the second deployment was made at Danish Kriegers Flak (DKF) within the WIN@Sea project.

Aarhus University and DTU Aqua had prepared lines with sealettuce (Ulva), sugar kelp (Saccharina), and dulse (Palmaria), which were transported in cooled containers to Klintholm Havn. On the day of deployment, the weather was not suitable for deployment, so the entire setup was assembled and stored in the harbor until it could be deployed the following day.

Special for this second deployment was also a cooperation with OLAMUR sister project in EU, ULTFARMS. In parallel with the deployment of lines from WIN@sea/OLAMUR also lines with another low salinity adapted Ulva strain from the German Baltic were deployed. These Ulva lines were prepared for a German ULTFARMS pilot site in the German Baltic, but were also deployed at DKF for comparison and for strengthening the cooperation between the projects. Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrum FH Kiel GmbH from ULTFARMS, had collected and arranged the transportation of Ulva material from 12 locations, and University of Gothenburg were in charge of the laboratory work, selecting the strains and producing the seeding material within the ULTFARMS project.

All seaweed was deployed on Saturday, the 5th of October, in perfect-calm conditions by Kerteminde Seafarm with the help of local manpower.

Although the weather was calm, there were strong currents in the area, which made the lines harder to handle. During the late summer visit to the farm, it was evident that no seaweed had survived the summer, but a large number of mussels had settled on the lines.

Therefore, during the deployment, mussel stockings were established with mussel spat from the farm.
